HOSTING A GAME OF CHICKEN RUSH

Part 2

Game setup

How to set up a game and tweak its settings

Before Game Day you first need to create a game of Chicken Rush!

Here we talk about how to create a game, how to change its settings and getting else everything ready to go.

Booking a Game

First, book a game of Chicken Rush here.

We offer a limited version of the game for free, chat to our team for larger games with extra features.

Once you have joined this new game, you will enter the Lobby page where you can Invite Players and change the game's settings.

The Host

The player who creates a game is automatically assigned as the Host and manages the following things:

It’s worth noting that someone else can “host” your group in-person and make announcements and chat to players. We appreciate that the wording can be confusing!

The Host can either set themselves as the Chicken or select another player instead, it’s up to you.

Get Charged Up!
Please ensure the phones used of the Chicken and Host are fully charged, reliable and ideally near a battery pack.

Game Area

This is the big circle that serves as the boundary area for your game of Chicken Rush. It doesn’t move or shrink and everything outside of it is “out of bounds”.

How big should it be?

Around a 25-minute walk across, which works out as around 2km wide. This is a rule of thumb that’s worked well for us in the past, but it can vary depending on where you’re playing and how long for.

Where should I place it?

It must include the Final Venue and Meeting Spot inside it. But its exact location is up to you!

Try make the circle cover notable landmarks, friendly areas and avoid major roads.

Game Duration

The Host can set a time limit (in minutes) for when the game will end. Here’s the three most popular durations:

60 minutes - A super-speedy game
120 minutes - A medium-paced game
180 minutes - A longer, more relaxed game

We usually go for 120 minutes (2 hours) as we think it’s the sweet spot, but it’s up to you!

Game Mode

Chicken Rush has two core game modes currently:

  • Standard
  • Drinking (18+)

In Standard, the Chicken can hide anywhere within the circle and teams race to find them first.

In Drinking, the Chicken must hide in a pub or bar within the circle. Teams check pubs & bars, getting a drink at each if the Chicken’s not inside.

The Host can turn Drinking Mode on and off from the Game Setup popup in the Lobby.

The Chicken

The Chicken is the person, usually wearing fancy dress, who runs off to hide.

The Chicken's phone is tracked via GPS and a circle shrinks every 2 minutes gradually revealing their location over the course of a game.

How is the Chicken selected?

The Host has the ability to choose the Chicken from the list of online players in the game Lobby.

While the Chicken can be joined by others to keep them company, only one player can be set as the Chicken.

The Chicken's phone is tracked via GPS and a circle shrinks every 2 minutes gradually revealing their location over the course of a game.

The Chicken can be any willing participant who is comfortable dressing up in a costume and taking on the role. They should be reliable, keeping their phone on, with good reception and having the web app open & visible throughout the game.

Try to find a portable charger for the Chicken and the Host to avoid any battery-related problems.

How does the Chicken give out points?

The Chicken is able to give points to teams through the app. Challenges get submitted over the course of the game and the Chicken can dish out points through the Challenges popup in-game.

Sorting Teams

How do I sort players into teams?

We recommend sorting players into teams in advance where possible.

Get a list of names of attendees and sort them into teams. We recommend 4-6 players as a good team size.

Then, on the day, players can register and ask you which team they should join.

How do I create a team?

The Host can create teams in advance from the Lobby by selecting Change Team and then “Create new team” for each team.

Do this process for however many teams you think you’ll need, you can create extra teams on the day.

Please just get in touch if have any questions.

Creating Challenges

How do you create Challenges?

The Host can create and edit Challenges from the Lobby page.

You can create up to 15 Challenges per game.

Who receives Challenges?

Teams send photo and video evidence of their challenges mid-game to a phone number set by the Host.

When the Host starts the game, they are then asked to enter a phone number that will receive the submissions.

  • If the Chicken is hiding alone, use their phone number. They will then receive submissions and give out points on the same phone.
  • If the Chicken is hiding with a “friend”, use the friend’s phone number. The friend will then receive the submissions, while the Chicken will just give out the points. We find it’s less hectic this way!
