The US Variant

The Fox Hunt

Often found played in the US, here are the rules to "The Fox Hunt" - a drinking game that Chicken Rush was heavily inspired by.

  • 1

Everyone puts some money in a pot, usually $10-20.

  • 2

Draw names out of a hat to form teams, with the last name donning a fox costume (or similar animal costume).

  • 3

If you decline the honour, there is a forfeit of the group's choice.

  • 4

The Fox gets the pot of money, buys everyone a drink, and goes to secure a pub or bar within the pre-determined boundaries of play. No entry fee or food-only venues allowed!

  • 5

All teams must finish their first drink before departing the starting pub in search of the fox.

  • 6

The Fox drinks through the pot of money and must answer all queries with "What fox costume?"

  • 7

When a team finds the Fox, they get to join in drinking through the pot of money.

  • 8

The Fox may post clues on a group chat at any time and must do so 30 minutes after the penultimate team has found the Fox.

  • 9

It's also known as The Chicken Chase, One Giant Chicken, OΓΉ Est Le Poulet, The Duck Hunt and many others... Including Chicken Rush.

The Origin Story

Our theory is that all these games likely originated from Shrewsbury, UK - where schoolboys hunted someone called the "hare" leaving a trail of paper. Those schoolboys grew up, had the bright idea to hide in a pub one day... and the rest is history.

Honourable mention to the Hashed House Harriers that helped spread the idea of hunting friends while drinking.
